Engineer - Engineering Division (bridges and civil structures)

Our client, a company whose mission is to manage, operate, and maintain various transportation infrastructures, with activities spanning engineering, construction, and maintenance operations, is currently seeking an Engineer for the Engineering Division (Bridges and Civil Structures) to continue improving the quality and efficiency of its services.

Nature of position

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you are responsible for implementing the maintenance program through the execution of major projects on the company’s civil engineering structures. In this capacity, you develop and oversee contracts with engineering consulting firms to carry out studies and project designs. This includes, among other tasks, planning, budget control, cost management, scheduling, quality assurance, and the analysis and processing of amendments for engineering contract management. You receive, analyze, and provide feedback on studies, reports, drawings, and specifications produced by consulting firms. You are also required to provide support and technical assistance to project teams and management. In this role, you will:

  • Prepare terms of reference for awarding professional service contracts to engineering consulting firms for conducting studies and designs (from preliminary studies to the development of drawings and specifications) for maintenance or infrastructure improvement projects, as well as for providing technical assistance during construction work ;
  • Ensure that the execution of engineering contracts complies with the contract requirements (quality of deliverables and adherence to scope, budget, and schedule) ;
  • Coordinate professional services provided by consultants tasked with designing major maintenance projects, various studies, and technical assistance ;
  • Review studies, drawings, and specifications prepared by consultants, provide recommendations to the Projects Director, validate actions to be taken, and follow up on their implementation ;
  • Examine and comment on studies as well as construction drawings and specifications ;
  • Prepare necessary authorizations for contract modifications ;
  • Monitor project progress for consultant payments, ensure compliance with project schedules, and manage financial forecasts ;
  • Assist management in project planning, process development, and budget preparation ;
  • Identify challenges and provide recommendations for their resolution ;
  • Communicate effectively with consultants, directors, project teams, and construction teams ;
  • Inform and communicate effectively with consultants, directors, the project team, and the construction team ;
  • Collaborate with the Director of Engineering ;
  • Represent the Company during meetings with partners ;
  • Participate in the development of standardized quotations and terms of reference ;
  • Contribute to the improvement of the Company’s operational processes ;
  • Provide the necessary support to staff under their supervision to ensure proper guidance ;
  • Perform any other tasks or responsibilities related to this position.

Required qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, ideally with a specialization in structures ;
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience ;
  • Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) ;
  • Strong knowledge of current engineering and construction practices and standards for bridges, tunnels, viaducts, and/or other civil engineering structures ;
  • Proficiency in overseeing and managing assigned contracts, including work assessment, conducting meetings, and negotiating payments ;
  • Experience in the evaluation, rehabilitation, and design of bridges, civil engineering works, and concrete and steel structures (asset) ;
  • Additional training in project management (asset) ;
  • Experience in pavement and urban and road development (asset) ;
  • Possession of a certificate in structure maintenance and design issued by the Quebec Ministry of Transportation (asset).
