Our client, a manufacturing company positioning itself as a leader in the production of technological materials and specialized chemicals on a global scale, is currently seeking a Corporate Health, Safety, and Environment Manager for its headquarters located in the Montreal area.
Nature of position
Under the supervision of the Corporate Director of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), your main role will be to participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of the overall management system in close collaboration with operational sites spread across North America, Europe and Asia. The objective is to ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements. As such, your responsibilities will include:
- Participate in the maintenance and improvement of the Global Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Management System;
- Participate in the establishment of annual HSE objectives and targets, as well as the development of the annual action plan and budget planning;
- Provide active support to operational sites for the implementation of risk management programs and management of change systems, including the identification, assessment, communication, and effective control of risks;
- Lead various risk analyses for business processes and projects (DRP, HAZOP, etc.);
- Participate in the selection, adaptation, and implementation of effective and innovative HSE management software and tools;
- Identify and monitor changes in HSE regulations that could impact business operations, and participate in the development and implementation of appropriate mitigation strategies;
- Participate in activities aimed at obtaining the necessary HSE licenses, permits, and approvals for the company's operations;
- Collect, analyze, and report regularly on HSE monitoring data;
- Perform audits of the overall HSE management system and compliance audits;
- Provide active support for the implementation of the Compliance Self-Assessment Program by operational sites;
- Support operational sites for incident investigations, identification, and implementation of preventive and corrective measures with an emphasis on high-potential incident prevention;
- Work closely with operational teams to identify training needs and skill gaps, develop training materials, and provide training to increase HSE skills and awareness throughout the organization;
- Provide proactive guidance and coaching to operational teams on HSE issues and challenges, aimed at improving HSE management and strengthening the HSE culture;
- Coordinate the implementation of the company's environmental programs, including waste, wastewater, and gaseous emissions;
- Advise all areas of the company on environmental matters, such as waste reduction programs and sewage plant efficiency;
- Monitor legislative changes and communicate updated requirements throughout the organization;
- Prepare environmental and energy consumption reports as requested by the supervisor;
- Collaborate with the Product Management Department in the preparation of Safety Data Sheets (using ad hoc software);
- Participate in the company's environmental audit program and emergency plan improvement initiatives;
- Support the follow-up of all required authorizations and permits.
Required qualification
- University education in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials engineering and metallurgy, environmental studies, or any other related field, or a combination of relevant work experience;
- 5 years of relevant experience on a work site providing direct technical support in HSE;
- Practical experience with various risk analysis methods (PRA / HAZID, HAZOP, What-If, JSA, and others);
- Be familiar with international standards (ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001) and the main industrial practices in the field of HSE;
- Good knowledge of international HSE regulations and effective compliance validation and permitting strategies (an asset);
- Experience working with a company with safety programs focused on worker behavior;
- Excellent analytical and persuasive skills;
- Be a good team player and be able to work collaboratively as part of a global HSE management team;
- French and English bilingualism (spoken and written);
- Be available to make occasional trips to different company sites (mainly in the USA and Germany).
