Congestion on Quebec roads has been in the headlines in recent days, a situation that has been more than overwhelming since the start of the school year. Are you one of the victims of traffic jams, the slowdown chosen by construction sites and daily rush hours?
Are you fed up with congestion to the point of accepting a pay cut in order to shorten your commute times?
A very interesting article published in and written by Mr. Bruno Bisson in La Presse, relates that a survey recently carried out by the firm CROP reveals that one in four workers is sensitive to accept a lower salary to shorten their travel time between home and work.
Here is a short summary of Mr. Bisson's article:
The situation is critical for workers on the Island of Montreal, more than 35% are willing to give up between $ 1,000 and $ 10,000 of their annual salary to reduce their commuting time.
This scourge is all the more seen among workers between the ages of 18 and 34. According to the survey and in this age group, one in three people (33%) would accept a lower salary to avoid traffic congestion and save time.
Between August 12 and 15, 541 workers were surveyed online and because of poor traffic conditions:
- 51% said they had irritability at work "often or occasionally";
- 48% recognize stress as being a consequence of time lost in their daily travels;
- 27% mention having a decrease in motivation at work;
- 23% suffer from a loss of productivity.
The repercussions would be more serious among young workers (18 to 34 years old), especially for residents of the metropolitan area.
Certain assumptions must be taken into account, workers in this category usually have young families and must juggle daycare, school and work. They are less inclined to take vacations, so at the same time they spend more time in traffic and often live in the suburbs since properties are less expensive there than in the city.
How much time do you spend in traffic and would you be willing to take a pay cut?
