It takes a lot of time to update your LinkedIn profile, and free time is increasingly scarce these days. Fortunately, we have a few tips for you to improve your profile in just a few minutes.
Here is the summary of the advice suggested by Kaitlyn Russell, from her article originally published in The Daily Muse.
1. Select your groups
Initially, you probably left out the groups category or added several without even thinking about it. Take a moment to clean up your current groups and join 2 or 3 in which you share an interest. When selecting, keep in mind the companies and jobs you want. Also, if you haven't already, link up with the University network you attended.
2. Update your current responsibilities
It goes without saying that the basis of a good profile is to have at least your up-to-date work experience since that is one of the first things your contacts will see. When taking on new responsibilities, changing jobs, or getting a promotion, it is a good idea to highlight it in your profile and let your contacts know.
3. Choose your endorsements and skills carefully
Take the time to think about the suitability of your skills and endorsements. Bet on those that will be considered as important assets for your application. If there are too many, those that need to be highlighted will end up hidden among those that are more or less sought after. Common, well-known software should not be your priority!
4. Customize your LinkedIn URL
There is no harm in keeping the URL link originally provided by the platform, but why not stand out? To customize your URL: point to the "profile" option, click on "Edit profile" and then you can select the wheel to the right of the URL located just below your photo.
For an impeccable link, use FirstNameName or FirstNameProfessionalTitle and do the same for your usual email address.
5. Ask for recommendations
Many recruiters and hiring managers will check your profile to see if you are the gem you are looking for, recommendations are considered quick references that allow you to get a feel for you. When an individual openly recommends your work to others, it may seem like you are a skilled and valuable employee.
When you ask for a referral, be sure to let the person know why their referral will be important and, to maximize your chances, offer to return the candle back!
6. Update your profile picture
You've probably heard, "You never have the chance twice to make a good first impression." So, opt for a profile picture that will bet on your professionalism and that will demonstrate your confidence and your will.
7. Follow the right people
Don't do anything at random! Connecting with leaders and influencers will ensure you have relevant tips, news and offers from the industries you covet in your feed.
8. Rewrite your title
When making changes to your position or changing your current business, take a moment to rewrite your title. You should know that with each modification, your contacts will receive a notification of the change, automatically accompanied by your title. So, to attract attention and spark the interest of Internet users, put a bit of your personality in it and stand out from the crowd!
9. Connect with members of your team
To develop your network of contacts, connect with employees in your company. You can limit yourself to contacts in the same department as yourself but inviting people you know little about is not prohibited. Take this opportunity to make contact and remember, every connection can help!
