These days, the phone interview is inevitable. It is known to save a lot of time and effort. On the other hand, it should not be trivialized, it is essential to be well prepared in order to know the company and the position in which you have an interest, and this, to sell your application well.

If you would like to be contacted for an in-person interview, avoid the points below!

1.Do not do the phone interview in a noisy place

There is nothing worse than a noisy place to reduce your chances of having a successful phone interview. Tell yourself that the interviewer will hear what is going on around you and that it is good to keep you away from daily distractions (dogs, children, etc.). The more focused you are, the less chance you will have of screwing up your interview!

2.Don't talk about your personal life

The purpose of this conversation is to discuss your professional aspirations skills and to take stock of whether you are qualified for the position in question. While personality is important, sharing your personal life won't help you land the job. Unless you are asked a question about your interests outside of working hours, it is best not to broach the subject.

3.Don't do multiple things during your interview

The hiring manager absolutely needs your attention, and you owe it to yourself to stay focused on the interview. While we're running out of time, put off your dishes or errands for later.

4.Don't talk about the monetary aspect

It is strongly discouraged to broach the subject of salary since it is simply too early in the process. If you are selected for the next step and the hiring manager shows interest in your application, when the time comes, they will be transparent with what the company can offer you.

5.Never put the interviewer on hold

Usually, this type of interview never lasts long. If you are genuinely interested in the job, nothing should be more important than this call. This interview must be your priority! If ever, you are expecting a really important call (example: concerning the health of a loved one), let the interviewer know at the start of the conversation.

6.Don't waste your chance to ask questions

At the end of the interview, you are always asked if you have any questions related to the position or the company. In order to confirm and demonstrate your interest in the position, it is more than recommended to ask relevant questions and end this phone interview on a high note!

7.Don't be late

Are you a punctual person? Well, the hiring manager will take note. When you are asked to call at a specific time, do so.

8.Don't assume your connection is good

Before your interview, be sure to check if your connection is smooth. If the interviewer is forced to repeat their questions or cannot hear your answers due to a connection issue, your interview will not be successful. Call whoever you want, but make sure you are ready for the call.

9.Do not interrupt the interviewer

You may be eager to make your point or talk about your experience, however, interrupting the interviewer turns out to be rude and inappropriate. Yes, stress can cause you to speak too fast or too loudly, but don't cut yourself off at all costs.

10.Do not use "filler words"

In a telephone interview, eliminate words such as: eh, like, udder, etc. from your language. Although in everyday verbal language these words may go unnoticed, in a telephone interview they should be avoided.

11.Don't go blind

Whether it's in a phone, video or in-person interview, never arrive unprepared. Not knowing anything about the company or the functions of the position to be filled is not favorable to getting a job. Do your research before the interview and, most importantly, not during!

12.Avoid endless responses

During a telephone discussion, it is best to limit yourself to clear and concise answers so that the latter does not lose the interest of the conversation. To avoid annoying your future boss, practice answering frequently asked interview questions.

So, now that you know the absolute dos and don'ts of a phone interview, you have a better chance of landing an in-person interview.
