10 things to do to change jobs hassle-free

10 things to do to change jobs hassle-free

Do you feel like you are going around in circles in your current position and would like to change jobs, but you are not sure where to start? Follow the guide!

An efficient and up-to-date CV

Your CV should go straight to the point and be easy to read. Rank the jobs you have held in order, from the most recent to the oldest, and above all avoid mistakes. The bulleted lists and the information in bold (without excess) are your allies. Avoid multiple colors, fanciful fonts, and unnecessary long paragraphs.

A relevant cover letter

Your cover letter allows the employer to find out more about your background and skills, but especially how you stand out. Mention why you would like to work for this particular company and why you would be an asset.

A complete and well presented LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn is a must for job seekers. Write flawless blurb, make a list of your main jobs, and don't forget to add a professional, but not austere, photo. Contact your best clients or former employers so that they write a reference on your profile and recommend your skills (for example, French, writing, communications, etc.). Clearly state what you are looking for and what your strengths are. Use the right keywords related to the position you are looking for. Avoid titles like "looking for a job" as recruiters will type in the name of the job (editor, journalist, dentist, secretary, graphic designer, etc.) to find suitable candidates.

Accept the approaches of headhunters

When you are not looking for a job, you do not even take the time to respond to recruiters who approach you and you refuse their invitations? Bad idea! Accept them and take the time to explain that you are not looking for a job at the moment, but that you will be happy to contact them if you are looking for a new opportunity. Also take the time to share their job offers with your network. You open doors for the future!

Send invitations to recruiters

We even suggest that you approach the headhunters yourself. They have lots of contacts and the best techniques to help you find the best job possible. Send them invitations to join your network and let them do the work for you! Follow their company page, comment on their posts and tell them why they should recommend you to their customers.

Prepare properly your interviews.

Look well-dressed and professionally dressed for your interviews. Take the time to read articles on the web that will help you learn more about the most frequently asked questions in an interview and how to best answer them. You will thus avoid the traps and put all the chances on your side to land the coveted position. Feel free to bring your portfolio, letters of reference and appreciation. Also show the employer that you know their business well and explain why you want to work for them in particular.

Inform your network

Of course, you can't make a public announcement on your LinkedIn account news feed if you don't want your current employer to know that you're looking for another job. However, nothing prevents you from sending messages privately to recruiters and employers in your network to let them know that you are looking for new opportunities. You would even be well advised to do so. Also, feel free to send out invitations to business owners or human resource managers who might be interested in your services.

Take part in networking activities

Several networking groups meet in different regions to chat over a good breakfast and share their respective services with the others present. You can also attend conferences or professional events related to your work and take the opportunity to shake hands and leave your business card.

Look at the right ad sites

Find out about the job search sites that are relevant to your industry. For example, a writer and journalist will look at the ads on the Isarta, Grenier aux emploi, Infopresse and FPJQ websites. You can even fill out a form with your preferences and receive all relevant job offers by email. Nothing easier! Your former CEGEP or university may also offer the possibility of registering to receive offers by email.

Ask yourself the right questions

Ask yourself what makes you want to change jobs, what do you dislike about your current job, what are your strengths, what do you like most and what are your expectations. You can then devote your energies to finding the job that suits you best.
